Relieving symptoms caused by uterine fibroid using TCM herbs

Uterine fibroid is the most common benign uterine tumor, which happens in 60% of reproductive women. Symptoms including hypermenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, iron-deficiency anemia happen in 20% of women with uterine fibroid. In patients who are contraindicated to surgery, who are expected to go into menopause soon, and who are not willing to undergo surgery, controlling these symptoms by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbs is a popular method in Taiwan. To treat hypermenorrhea, TCM formula such as Bu Zhone Yi Qi Tang and Qing Jing San could be used. To treat dysmenorrheal, Shou Fu Zhu Yi Tang, Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tand, as well as those formulas created by Wang Qing Ren (1768 – 1831, Qing dynasty) could be used. After relieving hypermenorrhea and using Spleen tonifying herbs such as Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang, TCM herbs treat iron-deficiency anemia. Because of TCM herbs, uterine fibroid patients would be less likely to undergo surgery, with adjusted a hazard ratio of 0.18. Meanwhile, using TCM herbs reduced the consumption of western medicine, including antianemics, hemostastics, analgesics, and hormone-related agents. Finally, comparing to western medicine, TCM herbs is an inexpensive medical service, and the total medical cost for treating fibroid was less in TCM herb users than in nonusers.
