Fu Qing-zhu: Relevance to acupuncture maternity care today.
Book two of Fu Qing -zhu gynaecology text discusses pregnancy disorders and birthing practices in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. This workshop will explore this work with a focus on discussing the relevance of these historical ideas to acupuncture that can be used in clinical practice. Although Fu Qing-zhu’s work is a herbal text, treatment rationales behind these formulas will be analysed with a focus integrating acupuncture into acupuncture obstetrical care. These treatment rationales are often radically different from current TCM theory, with Fu Qing Zhu’s writings giving new insights from the past that is needed to address the complexity of obstetrics today.
In this joint workshop Zena (US) will share the teachings passed down to her by Dr. Duc Kieu, a Vietnamese master who was influenced by the works of Fu Qing Zhu. She will illustrate these teachings with her experiences on treating high risk pregnancy, birth and postpartum care in a US hospital. Debra (NZ), will share her understanding and experiences from working with midwives and a hospital outpatients clinic in New Zealand while Claudia (US) will discuss her experiences as a Director of Acupuncture Services working on a maternity ward of a US hospital.
