While tong 通 has been a fundamental concept in Chinese medical thinking throughout  the centuries, the Chinese Medicine community in the West has only recently started to recognise its importance. Tong 通 has a broad range of meanings, including "openness" particularly with respect to passageways, "to communicate", "to extend through or reach", "to circulate", "interaction",  "smoothness" or "fluency"  and "mastery". It also means to put things on order to make something clear and coherent. If in Chinese Medicine life is a process of constant flow and transformation, tong 通 descirbes the state where this can happen unhindered as well as it is a treatment strategy to get to this state.

Our panel will illuminate and discuss tong 通 from different perspectives, and put it in the context of other concepts like tiao 调 (regulate) and he 和 (harmonize).
• Volker Scheid has faciliated our emerging awareness of tong 通 and it’s changing uses through time through his historical research (see for instance his paper on Ye Tianshi in the journal "History of Sience”) as well as his clinical teaching
• Yan Hua Zhang is wellknown for her book "Transforming Emotions With Chinese Medicine: An Ethnographic Account from Contemporary China" where she discusses  tong 通 together with other core concepts of the contemporary practice of Chinese Medicine.
• Dan Bensky, along with Chip Chace and others, developed "Engaging Vitality," where tong 通 plays a crucial role, both as a theoretical concept and as a palpatory experience.
• Dominique Hertzer's book "Durchgängigkeit (tong). Zur Philosophie des Kommunizierens im chinesischen Denken" will be published in May 2019 and discusses tong 通 from a sinological and philosophical perspective.
• Michael Huber is the head of the AGTCM-cooperation-school "ABZ München", which takes tong 通 as logo and as a guideline.
