Exploring the role of acupuncture in treating patients with cancer
In recent years acupuncture has made significant headway as a supportive treatment for patients with cancer. There is accepted and emergent evidence of effectiveness of acupuncture for a wide range of symptoms in cancer patients. Calls have begun to include acupuncture within healthcare packages for cancer patients with a growing movement in ‘integrative oncology’. Oncology experts, Government and health authorities have taken the evidence for the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture to heart and have made many recommendations to use acupuncture in patients with cancer. Given this growing acceptance and the frequent desire to use acupuncture as a supportive therapy in cancer care both among oncologists and patients, it is important to develop more understanding of how one can use acupuncture in oncology.
The first part of this lecture will examine the current evidence of effectiveness and safety and the range of uses of acupuncture. It will also explore safety issues, restrictions and prohibitions for the use of acupuncture. The lecturer will briefly discuss why there is a gap between interest in acupuncture in oncology and what we can do about this.
The second part of the lecture will briefly explore how acupuncture has been and can be used to help with the various health and well-being challenges that patients face as they go through different stages of cancer diagnosis and treatment with suggestions and clinical examples of how to help the patient in each. The lecturer will address the issues of dose and when/how to treat the patient rather than their symptoms. The lecturer is a specialist in Japanese acupuncture, and while examples will focus on use of methods the lecturer is familiar treatment ideas will be presented in broader terms so as to assist practitioners from different backgrounds make decisions on how to help their patients with cancer.
