Practical Orientation

In this lecture, Drs. Debra Betts and Sabine Wilms once again collaborate to discuss a topic dear to both of their hearts: the potential of Chinese medicine in supporting women throughout the postpartum period. Even though postpartum care has always been a field of great importance in Chinese medicine in Asia, its potential has so far remained mostly ignored or untapped in the contemporary clinical application of TCM in the West. Debra and Sabine will introduce clinical gems from Sun Simiao (7th century) through Qi Zhongfu (13th century) and Fu Qingzhu (nineteenth century) and then invite you to explore with us how we can translate this information into concrete advice and therapies for your practice. We will look at postpartum bleeding, breastfeeding, and the tradition of “sitting out the moth” or in other words, proactive postpartum medicine to promote maternal recovery.
