Many Western and some Chinese herbs are known to exert a hormonal action. Many gynecological
disorders have their source in an imbalance in hormones such as estrogens, progesterone,
testosterone, thyroxine, and so on. The disorders include menstrual problems of many kinds, PMS,
etc., as well as various terrain predispositions to other conditions such as gynecological infections,
chronic discharges, inflammatory conditions, tumours, etc.
The challenge for our practice is our ability to make use of herbal and essential oil remedies with
hormonal action in a clinical context. For this to happen, we need to:
1. Understand the functional energetic nature of each herb in addition to knowing its hormonal
action.
2. Systemically interpret hormonal conditions in terms of Chinese medicine and define the
syndromes of fundamental Jing Qi disharmony that lead to Blood and Qi pathology.
3. Describe the Jing Qi syndromes in terms of the diagnostic Six Conditions of tense/weak,
hot/cold, dry damp.
We will dicuss the most important hormonal herbs and essential oils for clinical use in terms of their
energetic nature and functions, the hormonal Jing Qi syndromes for their use, and their functional
diagnostic indications. They will include Sage, Chasteberry, Saw palmetto, Rose, Geranium, Clary
sage, White peony, Coriander seed, Black cohosh and Black spruce.
