Practical Orientation

Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is a serious, debilitating and potentially life-threatening condition of pregnancy. Limited research evidence suggests acupuncture may be an effective treatment, but studies published in English to date have questionable methodologies. Empirical evidence from providing acupuncture in a maternity hospital for over 20 years suggests acupuncture can make a positive difference. This is also reflected in discussions with members of the obstetric acupuncture community. In order to build a bridge between this lack of a research evidence base and what we see in clinical practice, I conducted a modified Delphi consensus study. Nineteen international acupuncturists with experience in treating HG were consulted, and participated in three rounds of questionnaires collecting quantitative and qualitative data on best practice. Consensus was achieved. The outcomes of this consultation could be used to develop protocols and improve the design of future research studies as well as offer guidance for clinical practice and advice to policy stakeholders.

The presentation will discuss the Delphi technique and how it was used for the study above. Findings and emerging themes will be presented.
