A Critical Examination of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine Treatment Models
This lecture takes a fresh and compelling look at Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), revealing how acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can meaningfully contribute to a wider integrative approach to care. While the biomedical model defines ADHD through symptoms such as inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, TCM views these behaviours as expressions of deeper systemic imbalances. These imbalances often manifest in the patterns practitioners see every day—restlessness, disrupted sleep, emotional volatility, and difficulties with focus and regulation.
The session will bring these concepts to life through detailed case histories, illustrating how TCM diagnostics and interventions can be applied across both paediatric care and the growing population of adults receiving late-life ADHD diagnoses. Attendees will gain practical strategies for treatment planning, communication, and supporting patients in real-world clinical settings.
We will also examine emerging research that highlights the potential value of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for ADHD symptom management—knowledge essential for effective collaboration with psychiatrists, paediatricians, psychologists, and other mainstream healthcare professionals.
Expect an engaging, clinically grounded, and highly relevant session that blends classical theory with contemporary evidence, offering a clear and comprehensive understanding of the role TCM can play in modern ADHD care.
