The Nanjing 難經 or Classic of Difficulties is one of the most important acupuncture texts in the history of East Asian medicines. Besides its use in China, it underpins most Japanese acupuncture styles such as meridian therapy, many Korean styles and is also the foundation of Worsley’s Five Element Acupuncture. Yet, it’s status as a classic is also very much contested and commentators have read and interpreted the Nanjing in man different ways. In fact, the Nanjing itself can be read as an attempt to make sense out of the diversity of opinions and styles of practice offered in the Neijing, the Yellow Emperor’s Classic.
We have studied and used the Nanjing in our own acupuncture practice for almost 40 years. In this course, we will: (i) briefly introduce the text itself from the perspective of meta-practice, that is the ability to work effectively with different styles of Chinese medicine; (ii) introduce some core ideas of Nanjing five phases practice that can be integrated into whatever way you practice acupuncture; and (iii) treat live patients on the basis of what has been learned in order to show how meta-practice looks in practice.
