Charles Buck (GB)

Charlie’s session at Rothenburg this year explores aspects of the issue of mastery in Chinese medicine and brings together ancient understandings with modern cognitive science.


With over 35 years-experience, Charlie is a distinguished teacher, clinician and author in the field of acupuncture and Chinese medicine.


After gaining a degree in physiology from Bristol Medical School he then completed a 3-year full-time acupuncture training in 1984 when he became one of a handful of people pioneering the practice of CHM. His tutors have included Ted Kaptchuk, Giovanni Macciocia, Dr John Shen as well as prominent professors from China. Charlie has held many senior academic posts in acupuncture and CHM, including working as external examiner at university master’s level and two decades as a senior faculty member at the UK’s Northern College of Acupuncture.


A seasoned educator, conference presenter and journal contributor Charlie has published extensively on many aspects of TCM. He is known for his deep knowledge of science and the China’s Classical medical tradition as well as his engaging teaching style. As an activist for this medicine he has served as chairman of the British Acupuncture Council and continues to contribute in many ways to TCM advocacy in the west.


His textbook Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine – roots of modern practice was published in 2014.
